| and orange is the last installment for this series. This has been an interesting set...made me think about the connections that color holds for me... But orange has to wrap it up for a while. Any more color pieces feels like a cop-out. I think I tend to be a cop-out as a writer. I don't like to put characters in painful situations. It pains me. And I don't like writing about my own present emotions. Sometimes I write about memories, but that seems to be as close as I come to disclosure on the page However. I am reading a book that's a 'portable poet's workshop' right now. I was struck by a section where the author talks about writing bringing delight. That people who write do so, foremost, because it brings them pleasure. Sure there's work in it, and tedium etc, but there's a whole lot of reward too. I do have pleasure, in poetry. Playing with words, playing with sounds, stringing syllables like beads. I like choosing and arranging, sorting and showcasing. So I am going to be focusing more on poetry. I don't know if that will be reflected on this blog. Maybe I will keep it the way it is, as a gym. But maybe, more poems will crop up here too. ***** 1:08 Orange is a straight-sided shape. Nearly always a hexagon. It sounds bright, like clear trumpets. Sometimes, orange tastes light, and frothy, like wedding punch with foam on top, ladled out of a cut-glass bowl. Sometimes, it tastes cold and sharp, like a lemon snow cone. It feels textured like those fake snakeskin boots, ridged and valleyed in tiny patches. Orange reminds me of push-up popsicles, Fanta in Mexico, my dad starting oranges for us with his teeth (fascinating the things he could do without flinching!). Orange reminds me of elephant masks, and the sun over Lake Michigan. Orange is a teenager. ***** All content original by Johanna Schuyten 7/6/2008 | | |
| Today's installment is purple. ***** 5:21 Purple is another curved color. It glistens like dried nail polish. Purple sounds deep, like the kettledrums. Sometimes it's so deep that you feel it vibrating in your chest instead of hearing it. It tastes smooth and cool, like raspberry yogurt, or jello. Purple has weight to it, and feels thread-stiff, like brocade. Purple reminds me of berry-picking fingers, of lilacs, of royal processions. It reminds me of stories about kings, and Lydia, and those flowers that look like a folded-up box before they open into a star. Purple reminds me of grapes, grape juice, being careful not to spill because 'it stains'. It reminds me of violets and communion wine. Purple is an older color, a color with seriousness to it. **** All content original by Johanna Schuyten 7/2/2008 | | |
| Covered the primaries, so I think I'm gonna do the secondaries. This is a good exercise. It's helping me connect an idea with a lot of different senses/memories. (Reminds me of synaesthesia.) Okay. Today's installment is green. ***** 10:50 Green is another liquid color, but more like tiny individual pools or drops. If red is being poured out of a huge bucket, green is spraying out from a shower head. Green is one of the colors with a smell - faintly like rain, faintly like your skin after you've been outside for a long time. Green sounds mellow and kind, like the cello. It tastes comforting, like thick soup. Sometimes, green feels living and cool, like moss. Sometimes it feels silky, like the tip of a very fine paintbrush. Green reminds me of sprites, of Peter Pan, of running water. Green reminds me of strawberry picking, and my fairy dress. Green is a big color. **** All content original by Johanna Schuyten 7/1/2008 | | |
| another installment in the color series. ***** 1:57 Red is a unique shape that's not specifically angular or curved. I think it's a liquid. It pours over things. Red sounds like warm brass...Z's trombone, or a mellow trumpet. It tastes like chocolate trifle. Sometimes, red feels thick and buttery, like chinchilla fur. Sometimes it feels moldable, like fresh home-made playdough. Red reminds me of luxury, of satin and strawberries. Red reminds me of stained glass, Christmas, the special set of tiny cups we use at Christmas breakfast. Red reminds me of hummingbirds. ***** All content original by Johanna Schuyten 6/30/2008 | | |
| drawing from yesterday's prompt, here's 10 minutes description, blue. ***** 1:13 Blue is one of the curved colors. It just slides into my eyes. Blue sounds mellow and airy, like the violin. It tastes like a thick milkshake. Blue feels long and silky, like a summer nightgown, or like mermaid hair. Blue reminds me of water and sky. Blue reminds me of long baths, and swimming after a dance-walk. Blue reminds me of wings, tails, feathers, scales. Blue can be summer or winter, and it doesn't have an age. **** All content original by Johanna Schuyte 6/29/2008 | | |
